Places and Things Worth Saving

Sometimes buying or building brand new just isn’t the same. Especially in Maine, people often want the old charm and find it worth saving.

The same couple that commissioned the Lulu bunkhouse later requested that their old shed be saved. Saved is the correct word. The rot had set in long ago. However, they didn’t want a new factory-built shed. They valued the rustic charm of the original shed that was built at the same time as the camp.

The shed needed:

  • A new roof
  • New shelving
  • Repaired sills
  • New / patched trim, siding, and floor
  • Reinforced sill
  • To be racked back into square after being moved into it’s final position.

Some things are worth saving. This time, to ensure it lasted, PVC trim was added at the bottom with additional flashing. We don’t love PVC, but it is from recycled materials. Once painted, it looks just like wood, and it doesn’t rot. Sometimes, a little compromise is needed to ensure longevity and durability of old structures.
